FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 15, 2020
At the Upper Deck Certified Diamond Dealer Conference in Orlando Florida, Kelowna business Players Choice Sports received a prestigious international award for Best Hobby Retailer of the Year. Upper Deck wanted to commemorate the memory of a well-loved hobby shop owner, Steve James, after he passed away, so the company created an award to be presently annually in his name for the Best Hobby Retailer. Steve James was the owner of the Bullpen in Hendersonville, NC and he was incredibly passionate about the hobby of sports card collecting. He was a bit older and bigger, but he had a youthful exuberance when it came to running his shop. The award citation reads “presented for tireless efforts in engaging customers with interactive programs and improving the hobby for future generations.”
Recipients Jason Wobshall and Katie Jenion from Players Choice Sports are known in the hobby shop community for running a lot of events from Monthly Break Nights, autograph signings, and free giveaways at the annual National Hockey Card Day in Canada event. They are involved with local charity work, and strongly encourage sports-card collecting in all ages from kids to great-grandparents. In 2019, they held a contest and took 20 of their customers to the NHL Draft in Vancouver, BC to share a memorable experience at one of the NHL’s premier events.
Chris Carlin, presenter of the award and Marketing Manager of Upper Deck in Carlsbad, CA, says of the store, “Players Choice always stands out, decked out in their store gear, we see them at different shows and events throughout the year as they work hard to increase their footprint on the hobby. Their customers love them because they work tirelessly on their behalf and we felt it was time to recognize them for their efforts. Congratulations to Jason Wobshall and Katie Jenion of Players Choice Sportscards for receiving the Steve James Award from Upper Deck!”
